Google has a trend to make changes to its search algorithm numerous times in the year. Even though most of these changes are trivial in nature when any major updates are introduced these can have a profound impact on rankings as well as online visibility of websites. The latest two updates which had a major affect on search engine results were Panda and Penguin which took the online world by storm. The reason for these frequent updates is to be able to deal with sub-standard quality of content and web spam that has proliferated online. These changes have been implemented to reduce sites that have violated Google's existing quality norms. These are beneficial to sites which promote good quality content, which gives search engine users a better and satisfactory experience.

These changes in particular target those who make use of Black hat SEO techniques and engage in   unprofessional and unethical techniques to manipulate web rankings. Those that are found to be resorting to any such unscrupulous methods are penalized and if the infraction is severe they will be de-listed from search rankings. The latest updates were done targeting those sites which have been over optimized through the use of excessive links, overstuffing of keywords, unnatural links etc. They also focus on unnecessary add-ons found on websites so that a user has access to content immediately.

Search engine optimization can be very positive and constructive if individual pages are easily accessible. This can be accomplished by using white hat search engine optimization techniques where there is ethical promotion of websites and more compelling content for the user. In contrast those sites which use loopholes or shortcuts to achieve results are not successful in the long term and when detected have to face heavy penalties imposed by Google.

A very effective SEO update is the 'above-the -fold' technique where if any website meets the required guidelines but makes it difficult to find original content of the site with the latest algorithmic updates the site’s rankings will plummet. Of course these changes are also influenced by the number of web pages at a site and how fast Google bots can scan content among other factors.

There was affair bit of controversy with these updates with some receiving them positively while many others felt differently. The entire purpose of this exercise was not to favor any particular set of users but rather to make the use of search engines a more satisfactory experience for all. It is a possibility that links which were targeted by Google were related to the disgruntled websites which were affected.

Many of the penalized websites overstuffed keywords, promoted unnatural links, had sub-par content etc. and henceforth they were hit pretty hard with their rankings taking a nosedive as expected. Some of the sectors of industry which faced the axe were sites of office space industry, pharmaceutical companies and the entertainment industry among many others.
